Product Notes:
Ranges from south east Queensland down the New South Wales coast to Bega in coastal plains and hilly country on slopes and ridges with a disjunct occurrence in eastern Victoria. Light to dark brown wood. It is one of the strongest timbers in the world (with its strength to weight ratio) having very long fibres which make it an excellent material for steam bending and also for boat building. Because of its hardness and difficulty to season properly it is only since the advent of modern hardened steel tools and computer controlled kilns for seasoning that furniture craftsmen have sought this timber as a material to use. Even so care has to be used in finishing a piece as the wood exudes a waxy substance which may discolour the final finish.

THE RADIATING FRONDS ARE FINELY DIVIDED AND MAY BE UP TO 4.5 METRES LONG. THE TERM "ROUGH TREE FERN" REFERS TO ROUGH PROTUBERANCES ON THE STIPES (THE STALK OF THE FRONDS) - THIS IS ONE FEATURE THAT DISTINGUISHES C.AUSTRALIS FROM ANOTHER COMMON TREE FERN DICKSONIA ANTARCTICA (SMOOTH TREE FERN).
ROUGH TREE FERN IS A HARDY AND VERY POPULAR FERN IN CULTIVATION. IT PREFERS A SEMI SHADED POSITION BUT CAN BE GROWN IN FULL SUN IF ITS ROOTS ARE KEPT MOIST. IT WILL TOLERATE MODERATE FROST ALTHOUGH YOUNG FRONDS MAY BE BURNT. IT WILL RESPOND FAVOURABLY TO REGULAR APPLICATIONS OF GENERAL PURPOSE FERTILIZERS.

There is a red edge on most leaves near the base of the flattened clumps. On branching stems the small clusters of lavender to violet flowers with yellow stamens and anthers are produced in spring to summer followed by large blue berries 10 to 25 mm long. The fruit can be eaten and has a taste similar to grapes. The fruits are bird dispersed. Aboriginal people have used the fruit to dye Lomandra leaves when making baskets.
Once established Dianella tasmanica needs little or no work or irrigation as it is drought and frost tolerant. It does prefer some shade but can grow in heavy shade. It would be a great choice for mass planting under large trees.
